Over the years, whale watching activities had been growing steadily worldwide. Its growth rates are more than three times higher than in other tourism sectors. This development is particularly problematic for the whales and dolphins on La Gomera´s coast. Numerous boat trips, which promise unique experiences, are offered every day. Unfortunately, not all providers have regard for these animals and operate only for their own commercial interests. Many tourists do not know, for example, that a boat travelling too fast or too close causes an unbearable noise for these sensitive animals. M.E.E.R. e.V. clarifies tourists and is working to achieve a safer whale experience. Its aim is to commit all boat trip providers to a list of conduct rules and reduce the number of approaches to the animals to an acceptable level. In addition, funds for further research regarding marine life are urgently needed.
